The invention of the Emergency Auto Transfusion System popularly known as EAT-SET has comfortably listed Brigadier-General (Dr.) Otu Oviemo Ovadje among the greatest inventors in the annals of the world. EAT-SET was invented in 1989 and since its invention a sigh of relief has come the way of many who have access to it during emergency times.
Gen. Ovadje, then a Colonel in the Nigerian Army, working with the Military Hospital, Ikoyi-Lagos, invented the machine to meet the yearnings of patients in emergency situations (especially surgical operations) who need blood to survive. The functionality of EAT-SET is that it has the capacity to recover blood from a patient’s internal bleeding organs. EAT-SET has a high quality storage system which keeps the blood in a protected and safe condition. Such blood can be reused within 24 hours after it has been recouped from the patient.

EAT-SET processes 500ml of blood in the shortest time of 2 minutes; making it the fastest blood recovering and transfusing machine ever invented. This machine is a sure solution to the problem of salvaging blood from the body cavity of patients in emergency situations. EAT-SET comes handy as it operates without electricity which is erratic in Nigeria and many other developing countries of the world. Other merits of EAT-SET includes: availability of blood for use to the blood owner, no risk of disease transfusion and no purchase of blood from blood banks as a patient's own blood is reinfused into their body.  EAT-SET main container is made of plastic which can be reused after sterilization.

The wide acceptance of EAT-SET and the ingenuity behind its invention, earned Dr. Ovadje the best African Scientist in 1995. Presently, EAT-SET is patented and in use in 9 countries. The invention has attracted financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of Nigeria and World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Ovadje has received awards from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and African Union (AU).
