The kidnapped mother of the Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly has been released. Madam Betinah Okunwa Benson, 78, and mother of Kombowei Benson, who was kidnapped eight days ago regained her freedom at about 10 PM last night. VME could not confirm if the N40 million ransom demanded by her captors was paid to secure her freedom. The freedom of Madam Benson was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Speaker who said she was handed over to the members of her family by the officials of Sagbama Local Government Council. She was abducted at her country home; Korokorosei in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State a week ago by about 10 gunmen in two speed boats. The Speaker in an earlier statement on the reasons given by the kidnappers for abducting his mother, he said they were aggrieved that the State Assembly under his watch passed the anti-cultism bill which threatens their operations.
