Yesterday Nigerians across many cities remembered late
Chief M.K.O. Abiola the undeclared winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential
elections. Abiola who contested the presidential elections under the Social
Democratic Party (SDP) won majority of the votes declared by National Electoral
Commission (NEC). However, Military President Ibrahim Babaginda annulled the
elections on flimsy excuses. Abiola later declared himself president leading to
his arrest by General Sani Abacha the then military head of state. Abiola died
in prison on July 7, 1998. Nigerians have chosen June 12 of every year as
Democracy Day in commemoration of late Chief Abiola, the presumed winner of the
presidential elections.
